Being fit for riding encompasses stamina, strength, agility, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. Those of you who have read my book, The Crystal System, will know that discovering my muscle memory issues explained why, after many years of riding, I had not progressed and became extremely frustrated.  I was unable to make real improvement until I embarked on personal training with the wonderful Sarah Light, an ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist.  She identified the reasons why manoeuvring my body into that elusive ear, shoulder, hip, heel aligned position was not possible.  

In years gone by when I my instructor said ‘get your heels down‘ I would push down with my calf, sending tension up through my thigh, pinching with my knees, raising my seat-bones out of the saddle, tilting me forward and unbalancing my position.  Since Sarah worked with me to recognise that tightness in my hip flexors was never going to allow me to ‘push down into my heels‘ without the catalogue of issues described above I have no problem with my heels.  Why?  because all I needed was a few simple, easy to do exercises that took 10 mins to do and released my hip flexors – Amazing!
